The names surrounding the lakes and rivers of western Maine have become the stuff of legend among generations of fly-fishermen. Historic Maine sporting camps still operate today as they did in the late 19th century. The woods still stretch unbroken to the horizon; wild brook trout and landlocked salmon still swim in the blue waters.
In the mid-1930's, an unknown author named Louise Dickinson Rich brought the region to the attention of the American public when she began writing short stories and magazine articles about raising a family in the remote woods of Maine, on the Rapid River.
In 1942, from her home at Forest Lodge on the Rapid River, Louise Dickinson Rich captured this world in her book, We Took to the Woods, which became a national best-seller. The book (along with two other popular volumes she wrote at Forest Lodge) describes log drives and Maine guides, huge native brook trout and land-locked salmon, and the spectacular wild lakes that make up the famous Rangeley chain. It describes a place apart, a place that today we would call pure fantasy. It was a world that only a privileged few could experience first-hand.
We are honored to be able to extend that privilege to you.

The Rapid River, famous at the turn of the century for 10-pound trout and salmon, continues to be one of the premier trophy rivers in the northeast. More than 10,000 acres in the vast, pristine watershed surrounding the River and the nearby Richardson Lakes are protected by federal and state agencies. The river is managed under strict fly-fishing only regulations, with catch-and-release only on trout, barbless hooks only, and a two fish limit on salmon. We believe in the rules of conservation, and support catch-and-release fishing. The river has a dam-controlled water flow, guaranteeing adequate cold aerated water and appropriate water levels for fishing most every day.
